Sometimes life doesn’t just throw you a curveball, it totally changes the game. There you are, minding your own business, wrapped up in family and Christmas and chickens. You watch silly videos on YouTube, staying up ‘til all hours of the night. You bake cookies, take pictures, and put up endless jars of applesauce. Then one day, bright and early on a Sunday morning, something monumental occurs. It happens in just a single moment, one that still takes your breath away. That wonderful, eternal moment when you gaze down at a stoic little plastic stick and see that magical word, the one you had been praying for, the one that had taken more than a year to appear: Pregnant.
On that morning of December 11, 2011, our whole world was flipped upside down. Well, let me clarify. That moment should have turned me inside out, but I couldn’t let myself truly believe it, not even at the doctor’s appointment five days later. There was something holding me back; I felt like I was living in a dream, and knew I would wake up at any moment. It wasn’t until I heard the heartbeat on December 26 that it became rock solid. That strong, quickened little beat, a sound I will never forget: pew pew pew pew. And at only seven weeks! Imagine, something that small (about the size of a blueberry) with not only a heartbeat, but arms, legs, and eyelids. Even an appendix and a tiny little liver! All inside me! I’d always been amazed by the miracle of life, but having it happen to you is simply breathtaking.
I am currently twenty-three weeks and well into my second trimester. If you are aware of what pregnancy does to a lady, you’ll understand why I have been M.I.A for a while. The first three months were pretty rough, though not as bad as it could have been. It was mostly nausea, headaches, exhaustion, and the inability to do much else besides watch endless episodes of AnthonyBourdain: No Reservations (my record was six in one day. Thanks, Netflix). I am back in action now, though, and definitely making the most of this much needed burst of energy. I have a few posts in mind regarding money-saving meals and how to cook a lot of stuff at once, so stay tuned. Also, in my absence from here, I managed to tackle numbers 6 and 14 (and 20!) on my list, Thirty Things to do Before Thirty. See, I haven’t been completely useless.
And don’t worry- I won’t bore you with too many pregnancy details. I’m throwing around the idea of creating a separate baby blog, but who knows. I’ll hit my third trimester in another month and may be relegated back to the couch, reigniting my affair with Mr. Bourdain.
